The club works on a membership period scheme. Three or four times a year we open our doors up to novices for a period of roughly two weeks. Anyone is welcome to try out a session or join during this period. After the period ends we do not normally accept new beginners. The reason for this is that there is a maximum number of students we can fit on our mat at any one time so we issue places on a first come-first served basis. Also, starting with a lot of other students, all in a similar position to yourself, means that the training is a lot more productive (and fun!).
When you arrive for the first time this is what will happen:
- You will be given a beginners pack (read it now!)
- You will be asked to fill in the health questionnaire before you come onto the mat. (save time, fill it in now)
- You will be assigned an existing member who is your "mentor" until you join (and often thereafter). Their job is to be someone you can ask lots of questions of and to help you through the first session.
- You get changed. Loose clothes or tracksuit are fine - whatever you'd wear to the gym. No jewellery, buckles, or belts. Also no shoes and socks!
- You will be brought onto the mat and there will be a warm up.
- We all bow to each other.
- You will get a talk about the club and its safety policies.
- The session starts for real!
For your first two sessions you are insured free under our club insurance and the first session is free for you. Before you start your third session you must join the club. You fill in another form (save time, fill it in now) which must be
submitted with two passport-sized photos (with your name on the back) and your application fee. These are then processed and you will be notified of the success of your application within two weeks.
If you are successful then you'll receive a membership booklet.
