Ju Jitsu (or Yawara) is a Japanese martial art that originated in about the 8th Century. The name translates roughly as "yielding techniques" and the art encompasses a huge body of knowledge ranging from throwing techniques to locking techniques to studies of pressure points. Different schools have chosen to focus on different aspects of this knowledge. Central to most of these schools is the concept of yielding to an opponent's attack and redirecting it. Ju Jitsu training uses few weapons which makes it ideal as a form of self-defence. The discplines of Aikido, Aikijutsu, and Judo have all evolved to a greater or lesser extent from Ju Jitsu.

Our style of Ju Jitsu, which relies heavily on Shorinji Kan Ju Jitsu, emphasizes fast, smooth defences with practical applications. As such it would be classified on the "aiki" side of Ju Jitsu. The reliance on speed means that multiple attackers can be dealt with simultaneously. Furthermore, a wide range of techniques is taught allowing the practitioner to choose the level of his or her response.

The following areas are considered essential to our style:

  • Ukemi - the art of breakfalling
  • Nagewaza - the art of throwing
  • Kyusho - the study of pressure points
  • Defence against unarmed attackers (grabs, punches, etc)
  • Defence against armed attackers (armed with bottles, knives, chains, etc)
  • Study of evasion techniques and self-defence philosophy
Our school does not teach sparring. Our philosophy is simply one of defence, not competition. This makes our art one of the most effective forms of pure self-defence around.
