Who takes up Ju Jitsu?
You do hopefully! There is no one type who trains at our school. We tend to attract people who want
to get fit, learn self-defence, meet new people and have fun. The average age of the club is mid to
late twenties though the age range varies considerably. We also have roughly as many men and women.
I'm really unfit - does this matter?
No. Training is geared towards what you personally can do so you don't need to be fit
to start. You will certainly get fit through regular training, but we don't often do any specific
strength or fitness building exercises.
Do I need experience?
No! In fact we prefer it when students come to us with a totally open mind. If you've done something before then please remember that we almost certainly do things differently and therefore your grade in your previous style/art won't be valid in our style.
Does it hurt?
Bumps and bruises are inevitable in any martial art. We don't do much hard blocking so
these are kept to a minimum. More serious injuries than these are extremely rare. If you're
not at a high fitness level then you are likely to ache a day or two after your first session,
but this vanishes as you continue to train.
Is it very military?
Not really. We don't tend to shout at people as encouragement works much better. We also don't make
you do anything you don't want to (what would be the point?). We do use some traditional protocols
(like calling the instructor 'sensei' and bowing a lot) but these tend to be retained for safety purposes.
How often do I have to come?
We like students to train regularly as it is much easier to follow their progress, but
how often you train is completely optional. Beginners often come once a week, die hards do three sessions.
All you need to remember is that Ju Jitsu, like any other skill, requires practice and the more you come
the quicker you'll progress.
Do you have coloured belts?
Yes, we have a range of grades ranging from white to black. Gradings are held regularly and
if you are ready and fancy trying it then give it a go...
What sort of stuff will I learn?
You'll start with the simplest techniques such as defences against someone grabbing you or punching you (the most
common attacks seen on the street). As you progress you'll learn defences against weapons and multiple
attackers. You'll also learn how to protect yourself when you fall and eventually be able to do some
quite spectacular gymnastics!
Is it like Karate / Brazilian Ju Jitsu / Advanced Cross Stitch?
There's a lot of martial arts out there, and a lot of styles of Ju Jitsu as well. We're a pliant (rather than striking) art so we would have more in common with Judo, Aikido and other forms of Ju Jitsu than Karate, Kung Fu, Kickboxing etc. We also are on the aiki side of the art so are quite different from sparring styles (like Judo, Brazilian or Gracie Ju Jitsu, Kempo). You might have seen some of our techniques before but our syllabus is unique so we guarantee something interesting to learn!
Have we answered your questions? If not then look at "What is Ju Jitsu"
or "How we train" and see if your answer's
in there. Otherwise email us.
